Yes there was a real James Bond. But he wasn't a spy - he wrote a book called 'The Birds of the West Indies', and Ian Fleming used his name when he wrote Casino Royale, the first Bond novel.
By the way, in Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan picks up a copy of this book together with the binoculars when he's going to spy on the island clinic in Cuba while sitting on the beach. (The scene where he meets Hayley Berry). This was a very cool touch to the movie.

Ian Flemming is believed to have based the character of James Bond on this man: Sidney Reilly.
Also Flemming was never a British Spy. He wrote James Bond as a fictional novel of this he wanted to do. If you ever want to read a little more about it there is a book called Uncle John's 10th Anniversary Bathroom Reader. There is a few entries about it.

I additionally like the way the franchise has desperate to portray Bond now: much less gadgets, greater actual. Plus a very sturdy tale. The franchise is in sturdy palms with Daniel Craig as Bond. My own scores of the Bond actors: # a million - Sean Connery # 2 - Daniel Craig # 3 - George Lazenby (On Her Majesty's secret provider) # 4 - Pierce Brosnan # 5 - Roger Moore # 6 - Roger Daltry Take care. :-)
