why do companies put "no purchase neccasary" on things when they run competitions?

Because if purchase was necessary then it would legally be classed as gambling and would have to be regulated as such

It means the entry to the competition is free you just have to buy the product.

Something to do with covering themselves legally. You can send your competition answer by post etc without having to buy their product.
