One of the many greats. Right up there with Hendrix, Clapton, and Prince.

Before I typed this answer, I read through what has been submitted. My favorites were from eightbreaker and grn (except for the Prince remark) but the idea of "The Greatest" is something that each listener has to decide. As I suspected, Jimi Hendrix was listed by some. Hendrix , in my humble opinion, was not that great of a guitarist, he WAS one of the best innovators I ever heard, but when I turn the overdrive on my amp wide open, a lot of junk sounds good. Prince is a good blues type guitarist, but then again he is not the same type as SRV. So in answer to your question, if SRV is the greatest guitarist to you...........then he is. I wish I could name one in peculiar, but I like so many different players. I think that George Harrison is one of the most overlooked players that have strapped one on. Probably ,the person that thought up ,built and played the first guitar is most likely the greatest. If that had not been done, then we would not be debating this question

This is such a subjective question and is all a matter of opinion. Stevie was great at what he did and he did help bring back the blues to a younger generation. As far as the greatest goes it's just a matter of opinion. I have played guitar for a long long time and I like Stevie , Clapton , Hendrix etc. etc. but I also like Chet Atkins ,Junior Brown and so on. It's kinda like ice cream Theres chocolate, vanilla, strawberry...........Three different flavors , but there all still ice cream. The flavor you choose is up to you.

Not by any stretch of imagination, except in the sense that every artist is the best at what s/he does. Prince, by the way, is a joke - I really hope so LOL.
Segovia, Tarres, and nowadays John Williams had way more musical knowledge and classical technique.
Django Reihardt had much more improvisational skill, melody and harmony.
Jimi Hendrix had way more energy.
B.B. King has way more impressive blues solo.
Robert Fripp, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson annd Yngwie Malmsten have way superior technique.
Eric Clapton is more unique and innovative.
Pat Metheny has a superior technique and infinitely more interesting harmonies, melodies, sounds, arrangements...
Adrian Belew has way more interesting musical ideas and guitar sounds...
Al DiMeola and John Mclaughlin are infinitely faster, cleaner, more precise, more complex.
But he was quite good.

Well he is def up there when it comes to awesome guitar players, I would have to say that also Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young, Brian May, and Eddie Van halen are among the best, along with Eric clapton and Jimmy Page. SRV is up on the top of the list though. and yes Prince is a awesome guitar player very talented man!

One guy said Prince? He's pretty good, but comparing him to Vaughn, Hendrix and Clapton is a bit extreme. That said.....Stevie was one of the greats. I love many guitarists form across many styles, and try to avoid the term "best" ..listen to his instrumental version of Jimi's "little wing"...pops a chub every time.

When it comes to multiple genres Danny Gatton is my favorite. I saw SRV once when he was on tour with Jeff Beck and that was the best concert I've been to. Seeking great guitar players has been easier because of the Internet.

all human beings might have their very own personals tastes. Mine could be Ritchie Blackmore as he did an staggering pastime with blues, rock and springing up the neo-classical type for rock. Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson - large technique Hendix - in a league of this very own web site, Clapton - large riffs and music shape Brian might, Angus youthful, shrink - saved it superb and straightforward and the checklist is going on......

That is a matter of opinion. He was a really great artist. And for the type of music he played, I am sure alot of people would say he is the greatest. The best way to answer that is to judge it for your self.
