Area 51, aka "The Groom Lake Facility" is just an American military base in Nevada.
The base was classified as top secret and the government denied it's existance officially until Bill Clinton signed an affidavid officially recognizing it.
UFO buffs long claimed that the base housed alien technology, and possibly aliens themselves, but this is very doubtful. Others claim the base was a test facility for the speculated about top secret "Aurora" spy plane; a far more plausible scenario.
The existance of the Groom Lake facility came to light in the mid 80's when a lawsuit was filed by the wife of one of the civilian workers there on behalf of her husband, who she claimed died from exposure to toxic chemicals. The suit claimed that the base was not following EPA guidelines and federal pollution laws when disposing of chemicals, burning them in the open desert. Of course the government officially denied all existance of such a base. It wasn't until the USGS inadvertantly snapped an aerial photo of the base that the government could no longer deny it's existance.
