People watching and shopping at Pier 39 (where you can also sea-lion watch) and Fisherman's Wharf. Lunch at an Italian restaurant in North Beach, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, snarff all the little shops in Chinatown. Take a trip to the top of the Bank of America building. Visit Coit Tower. Wander Golden Gate Park. Go to the Zoo. Check out what's playing at the Curran or the Orpheum, or the Bill Graham. Have dinner at the Equinox at the Hyatt Embarcadero, really cool because the entire restaurant rotates while you eat. There's sooo much to do - but keep in mind that some things take planning. You have to buy tickets in advance to go to Alcatraz, some of the more popular restaurants take reservations weeks in advance, and some shows sell out fast.

I love San Francisco! As said, definitely go to Alcatraz, cross the Golden Gate Bridge into Saulsalito-it's my dream to live there! There's always fun at pier 39. We planned on spending one day at the pier, and spent three. Also make sure to visit Ghiradelli Square, especially if you like chocolate.

Sorry to piggy back onto your question! I'm also coming to San Francisco with a child and wanted to be able to save this thread for the great ideas.

i live in san francisco and the best thing to do is ride a Cable Car or go Downtown to see the beautiful building. Also, you might want to take a Ferry Ride to Saulsalito.

Have dinner at the El Mansour restaurant. It's a fantastic Moroccan place on the west side. http://www.elmansour.com
Plan to spend 2-3 hours and catch the belly dancer. You'll never forget the place :))

Go to Market & Powell and buy a MUNI pass. You can buy one good for one day or for several days.
When there, you can buy a Muni Map for few dollars.
http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mhome/home50.htm
Ride cable car to Fisherman's Wharf, walk out there to Pier 39, then hop on the rail line that reuns down the Embarcadero and get off at Ferry Bldg. Walk throufh Ferry Bldg. Get out on Market St. and catch a vintage Muni. Your can ride it to the Castro District. Get out, go to a coffee house, look around and go to the underground station and catch the Muni Metro back to Civic Center. Get off, exit and walk through the library, city hall, or Asian Art Museum. Show your muni pass to get a discount on your admission. Go back out on Market St. and tell the driver you want to go to Powell St. Get off there and go into Nordsrtroms or the Westfield Mall and look around. There is a large eating area, grocery store, and clean bathrooms and a place to wash your hands on lowest level.
Oh, you don't have to do that all in one day or you'll really be running. Any city museum, you can show your muni transfer or pass and get a discount.
