Many of my friends have pet hamsters. I hear a lot about them being smelly but i have had one for 2 months and she doesent smell like flowers, she dosent smell like anything which is a good thing. I clean her cage once every week and a half. I also have cage deodorant. i got my first hamster when i was 8 and i started cleaning the cage then. Best type of pet in my mind.

In my opinion, a rat is the best small mammal for a pet. With few exceptions, they have a friendly temperament and do not bite. (Hamsters and mice are more likely to bite and mice smell a lot worse than rats.) Hamsters are fragile; if they fall, they can be fatally injured. A rat, even if it has never been handled before, becomes tame in just a few minutes.
If you prefer a bird, I recommend a cockatiel or a hand-fed parakeet. Generally, cockatiels are easier to tame, but it also depends on the individual. I recommend you handle the bird before buying it, to make sure it is tame. Have the wings clipped so the bird won't fly out a door, and also because it is easier to form a bond with a bird with wings clipped. One bird is better than two if you want it to be tame, but if you don't spend much time with it, it needs a friend.

If you're looking for something to help your child learn both compassion as well as responsibility, I honestly think that a rabbit may be a wonderful answer.
Pros for you as mom:
-No noise
-Not much smell
-Caged
-Can be trained as your child grows to learn responsibilities

Pros for your son:
-sense of responsibility
-companionship
-pride in his abilities as a pet owner
-excitement at what mom let him have!

I got my son his first rabbit when he was 6. We kept it caged until both the rabbit and my son became acclimated and used to one another. Then, because rabbits are actually very sociable animals, we slowly began letting it out, and over the next 6 months, my son's responsibility for the bunny grew, we litter box trained it, and it became a house rabbit.... just like a little kitty. There are a lot of things he had to learn throughout that time, in order to prepare for that eventuality with the rabbit becoming a bigger part of our lives like it did, but i got a great feeling whenever he would turn around with a friend and try to teach them the same responsibilities he had learned.
A rabbit can actually be trained in a number of days to do these things, and their ability to take to litter boxes is almost like second nature to them, but it was important for me to take things slow with my son, so he more fully understood what he was getting into, as Im sure you want for your son with a pet.
Regardless of what type of pet you choose, please consider adopting from a shelter, and let your son know that in just doing that, he has become the new pet's personal hero :)

Depends how much cleaning you want to handle and the smells you can handle.

Turtles are good pets-- they don't smell to bad and are easy to care for.
Hamsters or mice are also good pets but then you have to deal with the smell and the thought of them getting out.

Good luck! :)

I've always thought rabbits were easy to take care of. When I was little, my parents surprised me and my older brother with bunnies on Easter, from the "easter bunny". They ended up accidentally getting let out, but we had a great time and they were easy to take care of. They aren't too hyper, so I believe it would be a good first pet.

Try a hamster, gerbel, lizard, guine pig, or rat. I had a hamster when I was little and I loved it. I also had a rabbit which was cool!
