My fiance and I rent a house. Hes lived here for 2 years in June & I moved in last March. Shortly after I moved in I noticed there was moisture in the windows and some mold looking stuff growing around the windows. I did the girly thing & cleaned it- using bleach! In October his parents were coming, I did the "clean the whole house again", & there was again. I told him he needed to call the landlords, & he did. They said they'd call him next week of when they could come by. He travels alot so he told them to call me & set up a time. They never called. He called back & they said they would just let themselves in & we said NO. By then it was just about Christmas time & we were going to Hawii for 2 & a half weeks. When we got back he was right back to traveling & called the landlord every time he was back home. Now here it is end of Feb & I wanted to clean the house again & I can't because they don't want the windows cleaned. And now I've found mold in the pantry and on the back door!

sounds like the attic or basement is infested in mold, if not the entire inside of the walls. if its coming out all over, it means its all over but you just can't see it.

I'd pack my stuff, take it to a storage bin, sterilize it all, then move it all into a new place. I would cut that lease instantly and get out. I am sure you both have had a cough, sneezes, runny nose, hard to breath, etc in the house? that is first signs of mold take over.

If the mold is this bad, then it most likely is "black mold" by now in the dark parts of the house. The spores on this mold can kill you. Every day you guys stay in that house, the more infected you become and the more ill you will remain or become later.

To have mold removed you need to call in a specialists, as I had to deal with this at a building I was converting for work. It is not a job for a home owner nor a landlord to do. There are laws and regulations pertaining to all this.

If you landlord says no to instant vacate and refund of deposit, call an attorney. As you have every right to leaving with money.

There is a lot of hype, now, on stachybottrus mold. To put your mind at ease, go the a hardware store and buy a test kit. They're about $30. You probably don't even have mold. It's probably mildew, which is yucky, but not the least bit dangerous. Some people were right. Either way it's caused by moisture. If you don't solve that, nothing else you do will work.

Sounds like you have too much humidity in the home. Do you have or run the fan when showering? Do you have a ventless (no flue) gas fireplace?

Mold and mildew spores are available just about every where. And they will sprout when the conditions are right. You should get an inexpensive digital indoor weather unit, like at Target, for about $20 to $30. Humidity readings over 70% will give you grief in the winter. The moisture will tend to condense on outside facing walls and around windows.

All things of this sort derive from moisture. Try to find the source of moisture, either the roof, or condensation, or bad insulation, I can't say without looking at the house, but there is no such infestation without a source of water, once you stop the water the infestation stops. Any other solution is not solving the problem and is usually unhealthy.
