every year around this time, we seem to find many large wasp-like critturs slowly emerging from gawd knows where and crawling painfully around. They could be hornets but they are very slow and almost dead. What are they? We live in Cornwall

lots of insects bury their young in eggs in the ground and when things start to warm up, even slightly they are born. If they're in your house you probably have an infestation and should call an exterminator. Otherwise just chalk it up to nature.

I had something wasp-like living behind the mirror bit of the wingmirror on my car. I thought it was the queen wasp (because it was so big) hibernating, but maybe it is like what you are experiencing. It was very slow moving and barely reacted. I think if you are in an old house then it could be baby hornets hatching from nooks and crannies in your house. Apparently they like to live in and eat wood, and will live in the eaves of your house etc. If its a big problem then get an exterminator in. If you don't have pets or young children that like to explore things then there are some poisons and sprays you can buy from the DIY shops, but if its only a handful, then maybe just worth putting up with them. In the winter, when they are dormant, you could have a look in your attic and other corners for a nest.

Sounds dodgy, are they inside or out? I had a wasp nest in an air vent leading into my bathroom, it was quite freightening - especially as it was late summer as they were nesting for the queen and at there most viscious.
I got in touch with the Enviromental department of the council and thay sent a guy round to kill them. Best £45 i have spent in ages, although it is free if you are a council tennant. He made it look easy and had them dead in no time.

The wasps are waking up from hibernating so they are still a quarter of the way asleep. So that explains why they are moving slow. As for them crawling aroundyour house it may be because you have too many sweets lying about that they can get thier hands on.
