We just bought the vehicle used from a private seller, and now cannot get ahold of him to ask questions about this problem.

We cannot under any combination of button pushing, lever pulling and shifting get the 4WD to engage. The 4WD indicator light is not going on, either. So, we are assuming it's busted somehow.

I've read several other answers on other models that there might be a vaccuum hose or a fuse or some sort of switch that's broken or malfunctioning.

My question is, can you give me a worst case scenario about the most troublesome thing that could be wrong with the 4WD system, and about how much it would cost to fix it at an average dealer repair?

(We plan on taking it to an Isuzu dealer next week. Also, please don't tell me to just get a new car. That defeats the purpose of the question)

Thanks!!

Check all the fuses in the panel.it has a fuse for the so called 4wd button.there is also a vacuum operated switch on the front differential, take it off and put 12 volts to it to see if it does anything,im having the same problem with my blazer, process of elimination,if your somewhat mechanically inclined, prolong taking it to the dealer unless you want to pay $75 to $90 an hour plus parts.

The very worst case would be a malfunctioning transfer case. If that's the case, I would look for one at a junk yard, it should not be more than $200 used, add $500-600 installation.

On my 4 wheel drive I must be in neutral with foot on the brake to get it to shift. If you did this then the only other thing I would suggest is to see if there is a fuse blown before taking it in for expensive repair

worst case the transfer could be bad, which would cost 2-3 thousand to replace 500 to1000 to rebuild, but most likely it will be somthing simple that will cost 500 or less
