I noticed that babies have a sweet smell that comes from their skin or breath I think. Even when they don't have baby lotion or powder they still smell so sweet. Why?

In Sweden, a team of scientists has uncovered a distinct new-baby smell that may act as a pheromone to reinforce the sensation that babies are cute and adorable. What's more, men seem to be more attuned to this smell than women.

Karin Bengtson, who headed the study, told The Washington Post that researchers at first were startled by this finding, especially since other studies indicate that women generally have a superior sense of smell and are usually considered the more nurturing of the two genders. But upon inspection, Bengtson said, it makes sense.

"Women have always had to be more concerned with the job of looking after their children than men and display protective motherly instincts in their presence," she says. "These feelings toward the child were never as natural coming from the father because he was primarily concerned with the hunt for food. A successful hunter was better off adopting an aggressive stance. Back at the homely campfire this peculiarity could prove dangerous for the youngest and most defenseless members of the clan, especially under less than ideal conditions."

Hope this helps

im sure its because of all the nice smelling products, but i understand they smell good before products to! im guessing its like that ditingushied smell that your having with your sibling with there fresh cells and that? im not entirely sure though. I kinda put this to cows lol, when a cow gives birth it smells the calf a lot and starts licking off the after birth to clean it off. It also eats its sac(like the placenta) when that comes out the mother of the baby or anyother cow will eat it because they like the smell and it has a ton of nutrients in it for them!

It's a natural scent of baby - even after being in the womb so long with all of the extra fluids. One word explains it - God.

I think it's their innocence-- they are so precious!

I think the pleasant scents mainly come from the laundry detergent, baby wash, lotion, powder, baby cologne, etc....

It's a biological pheromone designed to override your instinct to eat your young.

I think it's nature's way of making it easy for us to love and nurture them, as we are they're only chance for survival at that age.
