I'm going to be buying a laptop, and I'm only using it for the most basic things. I want wireless internet and word processing, that's it. I want the most basic model I can find, but one that is high quality. I won't buy a HP or a Compaq because of previous experience, but I'm hoping to get advice on the Dell Lattitude or Inspiron notebooks? Thanks!

The dell inspiron is probably your best bet. They have a model for $599 to start you off. For deal information and coupons, visit http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good Luck.

Dell sucks bad!!
Try something from Best Buy. I got a LOADED eMachine for $800.
IF YOU HAVE AN OPTION...Stay away from Vista...
Here's why...
1) Third party drivers/apps are not allowed unless “approved” by Microsoft. Some of your favorite software won't run on Vista because the drivers have not been "approved" by Microsoft. This also means that the digital camera you just bought may not be "allowed" to connect to the PC.
2) ALL media copied thru Vista is SERIOUSLY degraded. The mp3s that you rip, are not allowed to be full quality. Same with DVD's.
Personally, if XP ever goes out of support, I'm going Linux

Sorry, don't have answer, but if you can locate any type of laptop for $600 let me know as most I found going above $1000. I want to get a notebook (size 8.5 x 11.5) and actually close to $2 grand. My advice is go to Dell website and ask if they offer refurbished computers.

You do realize that the components for almost every laptop is made by only a few manufacurers in china and it does not mater significantly which place you buy the laptop from. HP might have the same materials Dell does. I just ordered a Compaq myself and they have a nice one for $499 on their site.

Hi
I have just bought a LENOVO 3000 n100 laptop for surfing and good old basic stuff.
80 GIG. 512 RAM. fingerprint recognition to logon, 1600 Celeron Processor, built in wireless network card, four USBs, built in camera card reader (SD and one other type)
This one gives you the most for the least and its great.
Apparently Lenovo is the new name for IBM laptops.
I got it from laptops-direct .co.uk
There might be an outlet where you are too, have a look.
I got it for £400 which must be about $600.

I t is really a personal preference. Personally i dont like dell because that 600 is the base price, once you get it to where it needs to be it will be upwards of 800-900.

Inspiron 1100 looks biger than Latitude with silver gray color, the graphic card seems better for DVD movie, and can upgrade to 2.7GHz. Find bargain at auctions w/o sale fees.
