Mary Seacole, although an expert in dealing with cholera and yellow fever, was rejected by the Nightingale team that worked in hospitals in Turkey. Mary borrowed money and succeeded in the Crimea despite the racial prejudice of Victorian society. Her father was from Scotland, and her mother was a Jamaican healer, using herbal remedies from traditional African and Caribbean practices. Mary took her mothers methods using herbal remedies, folk medicine, and her knowledge of tropical medicine to the Crimea. She was an expert at treating cholera. She practised her arts on the battlefields, a big difference with the Nightingale group. She treated soldiers from both sides of the conflict. Destitute at the end of the war, she was rescued by the British government and army.
