It is the lateral pressure exerted by blood on the vessel wall. This pressure is needed for tissue perfusion. It is not a fixed number or any thing like that. Different measurements are accepeted as normal in different age groups, like 120/80 mm of mercury in a 20 year old or 140/90 mm of mercury in a 50 year old person ( of course you must compare with that individual's previous blood pressure record). Some people live quite a normal life with low blood pressure like 90/60 mm of mercury. But if you have a very low blood pressure like 80/20 and a theady pulse, it most commonly means that the fluid volume of your body has gone down due to a massive loss ( bleeding or diarrhea etc). If you let this continue, this low pressure would not provide suffient blood ( and oxygen) to your vital organs like brain, liver, lungs etc., and a SHOCK will be imminent. If the person can drink plenty of oral saline can be given. To treat such a person, all medical records and drug history are essential. And it is best to get proper medical help urgently.

First of all blood pressure is based on age and body size. I n general average blood pressures are adults: 100-140/60-90 children they only really give the top (systolic) number for and that should be between 80-100. By saying your pulse is thready it means it's weak. Which means if you are over 18 you have low bp and a weak pulse, I am guessing you found out your bp and pulse from a medical care giver (doc, nurse,...?) they should have given you some ideas of what could cause that if they felt there was reason for concern. I have limited medical knowledge but from what I know this could be a sign that there is something going on with your heart and there is low blood flow going on. If you have not seen a doctor you may want to, also check with your parents and see if there is any history of this in your family it could be purely genetic and they may be able to tell you whether or not to worry.

80 over 20 there is no way, you are not getting a true reading, Blood pressure is the amount of pressure that the blood in your body is exerting against the walls of your arteries. Optimal reading is 120 over 80, normal is 130 over 85, High normal is 130-139 over 90-99,if your readings are higher than that you better see your doctor so you can get medication.
