sounds like the virus I had.
I had to send my computer back to alienware and it cost me about 500$ dollars. Well, thats what I get for not buying virus protection. =/

Is it a new system, or one that's been around for a while? It could be a number of things, incompatible or corrupt RAM, the video adapter could be fried, the cpu could have gone south, the hard drive might have given up the ghost, or the motherboard might have some kind of problem (not too likely, since the cd's are working.) The only thing that's a given is that the power supply seems ok. Isolate them one at a time until you find the culprit.

Your graphics adapter is more than likely dead. If everything including monitor is working its a very strong bet it needs to be replaced. Run down to your local PC parts store and pick up a new one depending on which type of adapter slot your PC has. Then if you feel uncomfortable installing it get a friend experienced in installing PC parts or a Tech to install it for you.

Good luck

ok here we go again.

are you getting the POST BEEPS?

If you have a POST ( power on self test ) problem, it will not beep, but the fans and drives will all work.

did you install any hardware that may cause an irq conflict?

I installed a wireless card that caused which did the same for me

fans yes
drives yes
monitor no
post beeps no

it's a hardware problem if it doesn't beep.

add this information to your next post if you post again, so we don't answer again.

I've had this problem a few times in the past and how i fixed it may not be of any help to you at all but heres what i did anyway. i took the power cable out of the back of the computer, leave it for 30 seconds, plug it back in and then try after 10 seconds to turn on your computer.

I had this problem took it to a repair shop they told me my motherboard was bad. they called me back later and said it was the processor not the motherboard. try taking the processor out of another CPU or have someone who knows how to do it and see if this fixes the problem. if it dosent then it probably is your motherboard or your power supply, remember even if your power comes on if the power supply is functioning properly then your CPU will not work. good luck bought my processor at new egg.com works great and great price..

It's possible that your power supply is dead. Have you noticed any problems with drives failing or your computer constantly restarting when booting up. If so then replace your power supply. Another problem may be that your memory chips may be fried as I had this exact same problem yesterday lol.

Your OS hase been corrupted and that black screen means it can't boot, you might have to try safe mode if you can. Does the screen before the Windows XP screen show up?

If you are sure the monitor is ok and you connect it firmly to your VGA socket,,, then,,, there is a problem in your VGA card or your motherboard VGA if your card is integrated into it
