I have bought all my laptops on-line. Since you were looking to buying a computer from staples. If you have a store close buy, I would go there and look at the model. Sometimes they have the same one in the store that you would buy online for a cheaper price. Now, with that said. You can also look around to the other stores to see if they have the same computer.
Another way to look at a computer would to look at its specs. Write down what the computer has and go to a store that has a laptop with the same specs, or relatively close to it. You can play around and see if the specs. match up to your expectations.
Also, when buying on-line. Make sure they have a replacement guarantee. Most reliable stores guarantee their products. If you are not happy, then you can just send it back, and usually be out of shipping cost. I found that most places where I order do a great job packing the computers.

Echoing the above answer, it sounds like you're new to this. If there are still any small non-chain stores in your area, start with them.
Chain stores, especially the massive ones, usually have promos -- for their employees, not you. These are extra commissions for each sale of a particular machine. That machine will of course magically be the one that's just perfect for you. Even if it's not.
The advice I got at a non-chain camera store was priceless. The camera also cost £20 less than the 'discount' chains and came with a better free warranty policy.

If you know exactly what you want, you can order it from Circuit City or Comp USA on line then go pick it up at your local store. Sometimes the online prices are better than the store. If you're not sure what you want, you'd be better off going and talking to a knowledgeable sales person.

If you are going to buy a laptop I would say purchase one at a Mac store. There computers are really good quality. Also if you are a student with an ID you may be able to get a discount. You may also be able to get a printer with the purchase of a computer

There are advantages and disadvantages of online stores and brick-and-mortar stores. The online stores are usually cheaper but the brick-and-mortar stores have better service. You appear to be an inexperienced, first-time computer purchaser. You would probably prefer a brick-and-mortar store that is close to your home and offers training sessions.

If you're buying from Staples, you may as well go to a Store.
The only benefit from buying online is the reduced prices you get, for places that don't have stores.
Staples are probably fine, since they're a known chain.
DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS FROM EBAY.

It sounds like a fairly decent price, but I don't keep up on AMD processors. I know that if you are buying a computer with an Intel Processor, then 3 GHz is ideal. If it's that cheap there may be something that your cousin is "up to" check and make sure he/she is not playing with you.
