This is a pretty tough question. Age 40 and up is the hardest to find a companion due to the fact that most people have already found someone by the time you reach that age. The best way to start is probably by looking while you shop or just everyday life.

Well make sure you're ready first and not just looking to hook-up quick because you feel like you will end up alone for the rest of your life....trust me there is someone out there for everyone regardless of age....

I would try those dating services where they can really find a good match for you....don't settle for someone for the wrong reasons, okay? give it time and it will happen....

Think of things that you like to do and more than likely you will find them there (i.e. if you like to read, go to a bookstore). Go to the singles events that they have in the paper (they advertise them in churches too). Let your friends know that you are "on the market" and more than likely they have friends who are single and looking too. Plus you can always try the internet (I met my boyfriend from the internet!!)
