It means you won't have to contact your service provider to do any special installations to use the phone. You should be able to take your simm card from your old phone and slip it into your new "unlocked" phone and be set to make calls. Carriers "lock" phones so people have to depend on them to get the phone set-up; and you usually have to get stuck with a service contract before they'll do the set up.

theres a sequrity code you put in your phone if you want to lock it. to unlock it, you enter the same code, its an option that comes with phones. I recommend it so you don't call other people accidentally without knowing, while its in your pockets. it also is a good thing if you don't want other people to answer your phone. they won't be able to do it because you the only one that knows the sequrity code to unlock it, then answer the call.
