if i want to install a digital camera, mp3 player or use the cd burner... none of it works!
i want to know what part of the computer i need to replace or fix and how i go about doing that....

goto the system properties (hold down the windows key and hit the pause/break key) select the hardware tab and then the device manager. check to see if there are any yellow marks where the usb items are or any unknow items. if so, then it means the drivers for the motherboard that control usb are not installed and need to be. double click on where the yellow mark is to see the properties of the item. click on the reinstall drivers and see what you get. it should automatically load them if using XP.

You might want to get a USB Cable that lights up when plugged in. Belkin USB A/B Cable with Blue LED

I would also check the Device Manager and the USB Root Hub Properties. There is a power saving feature in windows that turns off the USB ports to save power. It is a box that you should uncheck.

It may be as simple as upgrading the drivers for your USB ports. Right click on your "my computer" icon on the desktop, then click properties, then click hardware, then click "system devises". Go down the list till ya see the usb port/port's an click the plus(+) icon, then right click on the usb port and then click "upgrade driver". Microsoft will search and find and install the driver/drivers automaticlly. Good luck. Mikie.
