it is regarding schedule. just like every sport. the number one high school team has 2 losses while the number 3 is undefeated. its not based on win to loss ratio, its an opinion on the teams performance at that time.

What's most important is who you have beaten. For OSU, the only ranked team they've beaten is Indiana, who is about to be unranked. So when the new polls come out on monday Ohio State will have beaten no one in the current top 25. Wisconsin, on the other hand, has beaten Marquette, Ohio State, and Pittsburgh. What it comes down to is that Ohio State has more tradition so they get more respect. It won't matter anyway because Wisconsin will beat Ohio State twice before the year is done.

The question "What have you done lately?" has a big impact on the polls. Wisconsin was ranked ahead of Ohio State after beating them on Jan 9th. But then Wisconsin dropped down a bit after they lost to Indiana. Ohio State hasn't lost any games after the Wisconsin game, so they haven't lost any ground in the polls.
Now that Wisconsin has lost to MSU, it will be interesting to see how the polls go if Wisconsin can beat Ohio State on Saturday!

I think the nation, and particularly the sports writers are infatuated with Greg Oden, and his 40 year-old face, or something. Is that guy really 18 or 19? Anywho, its all media, attention to the big guy, the media dreaming of comparisons to Michigan’s fab-five, with Conely & Cook, etc. I guess there isn’t anything sexy about good, tough defensive, team-basketball that Wisconsin and Bo have to offer. I also think the media looks to OSU as being a center stage team based on their history and who they played and their tough losses, as was referenced by lethebike and James.
In my opinion, I agree with you that all of the above is a weak argument. I say hats off to Steve G about making the excellent point of “losing” those games as opposed to “winning” them. An additional point that I haven’t seen anyone make yet is the fact that OSU didn’t and will not make a trip to Bloomington (3rd place), and they also miss “at” Iowa (tied for 4th). After OSU’s performance of narrowly beating Penn State by 2 this past week, I doubt they would be able to come away from both unscathed. Wisconsin beat PSU by 26 and Minnesota by 13 (OSU beat MN by 18).
Do I think OSU has more talent than Wisconsin? Yes I do, and as a die-hard Badger fan, I’m extremely nervous about heading into Columbus this Sunday. However, I’m more nervous about East Lansing tomorrow, just because its “tomorrow” as Bo has been preaching all season. Its shades of Gene Hackman in Hoosiers in not thinking about the next step until you've reached it, isn’t it. ...but back to OSU; my opinion is that OSU might end up being better than Bucky in the end, but until then and/or they beat Bucky they don’t deserve to be ranked in front of them. I will say, though, that my opinion is based on what I think is fair and makes the most amount of sense. However, as a fan, I think there is true merit in playing with a chip on your shoulder, and if Bucky is ranked behind OSU, they might just play a little bit better, and enough to knock ‘em off.
…Sooo, after Florida lost, yes, please do rank OSU #1 and Bucky #2.

This is the problem with the polls. It by people who think they know the game.. I remember in 1985 Big East tourney. The top seed was #2 St. John's and the number two seed was #1 Georgetown. The reason was because the Hoyas lost three days before the tourney to Providence the AP dropped them behind the Redmen though they split the season series. The Hoyas destroyed them in the tourney finals and again in the National Semis in Rupp arena.
The polls mean nothing in basketball and even less in football but don't get me started.
