saying that she pays for them to stay at home. She goes on about it a lot actually, My friend who stays at home to look after his severely disabled daughter also gets comments thrown at him, I told her my mum has emphysema and that she is giving up smoking and her first response was, "well it annoys me that they get the help for free" which I thought was insensitive as my mum has payed for her NRT. Anyway she can't afford to get divorced so is seeking legal aid, does this make her a hypocrite do you think.

Well, we live in a society that offers help to those who need it and can't provide it for themselves. Sure this does mean that there are those who take advantage of the system and that does bug me but I would rather the help be there for those who genuinely need it and let the few who don't slip by.

Well if your mother has smoked all her life she has probably paid more into the NHS that way than she ever did through visable taxes and also paid a lot more than her treatment will cost 1000 times over.

With benefits there are so many kinds. If you are working you are already paying for the possibility that you might be unemployed. It is like an insurance policy for yourself. That is why there is contribution based benefit which lasts for a maximum of 6 months. It is based purely on what YOU have contributed so why the hell shouldn't you claim it?

Income based JSA is for people who havent contributed but what people get on benefits is no life. I can't believe anyone would be there through choice. They get barely enough to live on and I would rather them have that than have to beg borrow or steal to surrvive. As a tax payer the alternative would cost us a lot more.

Those on Incap, Income support or Carers Allowance are on those benefits for a good reason. They are either not fit for work or caring for someone who isn't or looking after a child.

I mean if this 'friend'' thinks all this is so bad then what does she suggest as an alternative? In an ideal world there would be no need for any of this. All families would remain happy ever after and parents would be together. No one would be born with a disability or develop anything that requires 24 hour care. But this isn't an ideal world and as such being a decent human being means the fortunate support those less fortunate. I would rather pay taxes for someone else to look after a severely disabled child than be in that situation myself.

Sounds like your friend has had a fortunate life but a selfish existance. And yes she is very much a hypocrite. How would she feel if tax payers said that she should either pay her own legal fees or be forced to stay in the realtionship and try to make it work.

Well that was a longer rant than I planned but I got it off my chest lol

Thanks for another great question!

I like living in a country where people are put before money. The welfare system is there for a reason and I would rather have it even with those who claim without good reason than worry about what would happen to me or my loved ones if we couldn't afford to pay our medical bills. You never know what is around the corner and she may well end up being supported by the rest of us one day. Legal aid is as much of a benefit of the social support system as job seekers, the NHS and state pension so if she feels that strongly she should fund her own divorce. So yes she is a hypocrite and next time she passes comment invite her to think about her own actions.

She has lost the plot. Having often to go in to an area of what is called deprivation it does make my blood boil and standing for example in the Post Office queue lots of these people actually boast how they are 'screwing the system', their words not mine Also money seems to flood in to this area from all sorts places, much EEC money too and lots just don't appreciate it.However, you cannot generalise as millions of people are on benefits because of genuine ill health caring for someone, result of redundancy etc.Next time your friend gets on her soapbox ask her if she had the choice would she swop places with your mum or your friend looking after his severely disabled daughter?.......I think not. In some ways she has a valid point but shouldn't get personal and judgemental about all on benefits like you say she is doing.

Maybe point out to her next time she's judging others that there's nothing that she can do about it. She's completely powerless to stop it and there really no point moaning to you about it, after all what will that achieve?

Suggest she write a letter to your local MP if she feels so strongly about it.

People are always Hypocrite's My nan was known for slagging off stay at home mum's who where on benefits, when my Mum left my Dad, with no home and four kids (two with handicaps) my Nana encouraged her to claim saying My mum deserved to be able to claim.

People eh?

don't blame her, blame the thousands of undeserving people who claim benefits when they don't need to. Believe me i see them every day. They make the rest look bad but they have no shame. At least your friend has a work ethic. She obviously does not earn a fortune and so is bitter that her tax contributes to lazy people. Good for her but do point out that not all those on benefits are scroungers and that people better off than her might view legal aid as scrounging too.

I think she is being hypocritical and she needs to be thankful that she doesnt have to rely on benefits. Not everyone on benefits is lazy and a lot of them would be glad to be able to go out and earn a living for themselves. Maybe you should show her the comments that have been posted on here

She pays for them to stay at home , what kind of stupid person says that? obvoiusly no education, probably works in primark !
Its unfortunate people have to go on benefits, the majority are , im sure, genuine, so when she gets sacked from primark , what she gonna do , duh, go on the dole, ah but she is entitled to it cos she pays into the system .... i doubt it!
