In general terms Rurouni Kenshin (the tv series) and Samurai X (the OVA) are the same. They were named differently because 2 different companies lisenced the two so they didn't use the same name. But Samurai X is techinically Rurouni Kenshin OVA series. To be more detailed, they are different because one was created to be a tv series and they other an OVA (basically focuses specifically on one part then tell the whole story) so the animation is different since OVA's have a higher budget and was more violent because it wasn't made for TV so they could leave all the violence. What Samurai X is, is compried of 2 storylines (because 2 OVA series were created) The first one called Tsuiokuhen (US titled Samurai X Trust and Betrayal) takes place in Kenshin's past. It tells the story of how he learned his swordskills and how he became a Battousai (man slayer) and what events lead to him becomming a Rurouni (wanderer) In the original Manga storyline these events were not introducted untill the last story arc (last few volumes of the manga) and that story arc was not animated into the Rurouni Kenshin TV series, therefore they created a seperate OVA to tell that story. The Seisōhen OVA (titled Reflections in the US release) was the final chapter of Rurouni Kenshin and basically was an attempt to tell the story of the final arc of the original manga storyline which was cut out and recap the TV series as well as show some new footage of what eventually happened to the characters when they got older. It basically concluded the series although the ending of the 2nd OVA wasn't created by Nobuhiro Watsuki (original manga creator) but was created by the animation company. So in short Samurai x is the prequel and ending for the Rurouni Kenshin series. As for which one is better, I personally liked the first Samurai X ova. It was very dark and had a very serious storyline and showed the violent life Kenshin lived in. It's probably one of the best OVA series created and good for people who like alot of action and good storyline but it's only a few episodes long. On the other hand the TV series is entertaining because it has alot of comedy and mixes in good action and some good story arcs. Both are equally good and of course to enjoy the Rurouni Kenshin series to it's fullest think you have to watch it all to complete the story.

this is how it goes: samurai X ova 1 to 4, the tv anime series Ruroni kenshin, and then finally Samurai X 5-6. In the beginning of the tv series, it was like a different life of kenshin but after that, the first ovas will be related to it and the ending would be the last 2 ovas. I prefer samurai x. The actions is much better. butI would say that it isn't for young children. Alot of people killed and blood everywhere. of course, the tv series is funnier or more suitable for everyone.
have fun

Samurai X is largely the "americanized" identify for Rurouni Kenshin. In a manner, that's the sequal considering "Samurai X" highlights the events that the protagonist, Kenshin, have been retelling to his friends in some unspecified time interior the destiny interior the Manga. the sole difficulty is that the anime by no ability aired all that. even though, they're making a clean Rurouni Kenshin anime this year, so we'd be waiting to work out each thing aired with artwork better!
