I'm going to California this summer and really don't want to get burnt but a tan would be nice. I heard that if you use a tanning bed or booth before you go on vacation will help prevent getting burnt and will help you tan more. I've never used a tanning bed and always use sunscreen.. but I was wondering if this really is helpful.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!! I think I'll just get a base tan with natural light and sunscreen.

To a point this is right. Because your skin is darker, you may not notice that you have a slight burn, and could do more damage. The best thing to do is wear a light sunscreen, maybe an SPF4 or 8. It gives some protection, while sometimes allowing a bit of color and more importantly, keeping your skin healthy.

Yes! It is helpful. It will give you the base tan and you won't burn as bad if at all. The first burn is always the worst! I would use a lotion made for tanning beds though. You can still tan in Cali in the sun with sunscreen.
Have Fun!!

Not at all, in fact it will make your skin more sensitive and put you under the false illusion that you are somehow protected.

Trust me on this one, I used to use tanning beds constantly and then I went on holiday and my whole forehead was severely sunburnt and I ended up in hospital.

Always use sunblock and stay away from tanning beds.

Take care : )

Getting a tan before exposure to a lot more sun will help prevent sunburn. however, nothing but sunscreen and non exposure will prevent cancer.

i live in california. its the best.

and no it won't prevent you from getting sun burned. wearing sun proctection will.

it won't prevent it because tanning beds use special lights that make your skin tan. it doesn't send ultra-violet and other waves like the sun

i might want to strongly recommend getting a customised airbrushing for the holiday and positioned on a SPF 50 sunscreen at the same time as on your holiday. The airbrushing is actual lower priced, and seems fairly organic. Being "very white" and going to a tropical region might want to correctly be very risky. keep your pores and skin! keep it youthful! :)
