The GM merger speculation is just that - speculation. Rumors are great for driving up the stock price, which is exactly what they are doing. It's also a great way for Daimler to sell Chrysler off without losing too much money. GM, though, wouldn't have much use of Chrysler, IMHO. They are big enough that they can share platforms within themselves. The company that will buy/merge with Chrysler will want to because they want a foothold in the US and they want the ability to share platforms for future products. Daimler was a poor merger because Chrysler and Mercedes don't match very well. Chrysler can't afford to build vehicles off expensive Mercedes platforms, and Mercedes is not likely willing to build cars off Chrysler's cost concious platforms.
So who would be interested in Chrysler? Chinese companies. Why? Common platforms would be somewhat easy. Chrysler has signficant (and underutilized) manufacturing facilites in the US. Chrysler understands the American market (in most cases anyway...).
If not a Chinese company, then Renault/Nissan is a possibility. I've heard Nissan lost a lot of engineering employees in the move to Tennessee. Again, both companies have platforms that could be shared (both in the car and truck markets).
The other rumor, one of my favorites, is that Kirk Kerkorian will buy a large portion, Wolfgang Bernhard will assemble investors to purchase the rest, and Wolfgang will make himself CEO. He might just be the kind of CEO that's needed - strong minded, enthusiastic, driven to succeed, and is passionate AND knowledgeable about cars.
Oh, and listen to Hello Kitty, she know's what she's talking about ;-)

According to the Business section of Thoday's Houston Chronicle, GM is seriously considering buying up or merging with Chrysler. Sounds like a good idea to me.

That seams like extreme gossip. There is no reason that I can see that GM would want to buy Chrysler and why they would sell themselves out. It just doesn't make sense, GM is still digging out of a rut and the last thing they are going to want to do is buy another company that isn't exactly doing excellent enough to compensate the huge cost of buying them out. It isn't really logical at all.

It wouldn't and shouldn't happen. I doubt that the governments of Canada and U.s. would allow it. There would be massive layoffs and streamlining if it was to happen and it wouldn't benefit anyone but Daimler. Daimler would benefit cause they would be free of Chrysler's problem. These 2 companies need to restructure themselves before they should even consider merger.

Sounds far fetched that GM will buy Chrysler. They have too many products that overlap one another.
It'd be nice if the company returned to American ownership though.

This may be a good thing, or not. How does GM treat their labour?
Anytime this happens, employees get nervous. Don't worry. Life goes on. People will be needing cars even after the sale.
Just in case any place is ever shut down or destroyed, don't all of you in one family get jobs, everyone in one place that is.

I have heard GM as well, and that they all will be merging into one big company, but it won't happen for a while yet.
