There are long waiting periods for SSI and SSDI in almost all states, since it's a federal program (although the states do some of the disability determination). Unfortunately, it's a necessary evil: if the process were very easy, then lots of people who were not qualified would free load and try to get undeserved benefits. That's why they need to have all of these restrictions in place. I am an attorney who represented a man with severe shoulder pain, degenerative disc problems in his back, and depression. He applied for SSI in 2003 and his claim was not fully approved until January 2007 -- this after hearings, appeals, etc., etc. So brace yourself; you could be in for a long ride.

(If you are denied, you will be allowed to apply for "reconsideration." If you do, and are denied again, I would strongly suggest getting an attorney who can help you navigate the appeals/hearing processes. They will usually work for free and then take a small cut (15%?) of your back benefits.)

The long and short of it is that SSDI has been abused by too many over the years, and it has been reformed so that only those who actually qualify for it can get it. In some places an alcholic can recieve SSDI because its classified as a disease. Too many who do not deserve these benefits are applying and clogging up the system. Thats why it takes so long.

You haven't been waiting long at all.My case took two years till it was approved. Most times you are turned down at least once and have to appeal.I finally had to take my case to court after being turned down twice, and was then approved.I know the wait is long, especially when you have no money coming in.
Be prepared for some more waiting,it is just a part of the process. They have to be sure that you are truly disabled and qualified for the benefits, too many people abusing the system.

I'm in WA State and it took me 6 months to qualify for SSDI and then there is no medical coverage for 1 year afterward. I was forceably retired because I was disabled and could not do the job anymore, my doctors said I was disabled, still it took the Social Security Administration(SS) 6 months to get my case going. It is quite a frustrating process to deal with--the SS Administration.
