Ah jeez, where to start?
1. In an emergancy, for example: got off the bus at the wrong stop and no money to get a taxi to where you need to go, a pone is vital for letting people know where you are. Saves you walking through streets alone, possibly at night, which is something many parents dread (although it didn;t do me any harm)
2. It is a priceless social tool. You are pretty much EXPECTED to have one by all your peers. You can keep in easy contact with others through texts and phone calls and strengthen relationships through it.
3. You don't tie up the home phone with your endless conversations
4. It gives you some individuality. Having your own phone is part of standing on your own two feet which, as a teenages, one aspires to do.
5. If the teenager in question has to pay their own bills (I do!) It better teaches them the value of money and how to encorparate that cost into their lives.
Yes there are negatives to owning a phone, but they are FAR outweighted by the positive sides. I am just using my opinion here though, and I welcome and conflicting views or arguements.

Giving a teenager a cell phone is about as safe as giving a kid a loaded machine gun, unless you have an unlimited minutes plan.
Oh yeah, a good reason for the phone: Calling home in case of an emergency.

Well there are many reasons that a teenager will come up with so they can get a cell phone.. "status" in peer groups will be one of them.. this is somewhat true, but why should you pay just so the kids will like your child? (they aren't good friends if they just like him/her because of a cellphone in hand) My opinion is that if the teen wants a phone, they can get a job or save their money and get a prepaid one themselves. I'll never get my teen a cellphone on a plan because half of them don't understand how much it costs to have one unless they buy it themself. It teaches responsibility. The only good reason I can think of for having a cell phone is in the case of emergencies. But you know that a typical teen will not only use it for that. If your teen is bugging you for one.. go with Cingular prepaid.. get a Motorola C-139 (cheap so you don't have to worry if it gets lost/stolen/broken) and disable the text messaging feature.. or let them get it and pay for the mins his/her-self.
