ok so far all a good chunk of the people say the same basic thing: if ur going to dress diffrent then we'll treat you diffrent.

They neglect the idea of acceptance. We should not all be clones of eachother! I mean thats like saying racism and gencide are acceptable b/c some one is different.

I don't think they all are. But the truth is most people that dress that way feel like outcasts and feel misunderstood, not bad but they do feel different and that's why they are seen as different. Why do some people see them as bad? Fear of the unknown. Very perverse in our culture.

Honestly? Because of the obvious reason. Goths, and punks etc, are basically all trying to be different in a not-very-original way, and many are just seeking attention. And that irritates alot of people.

Honestly, who dresses in all black, wears excessive makeup, wears chains and stuff, and isnt in some way seeking attention? I have nothing against any of these groups, seeing as I went through a "gothic" phase myself when I was around 16. But I was seeking attention, and then I realized how pointless and shallow it was.

Youll notice that very few adults dress or act that way. Its all part of growing up. I dont judge the goths or punks because I think its just a phase. And I havent yet seen a goth over thirty years old, except maybe for musicians who are playing to that audience, so that just confirms my idea.

You wanted a reason, thats it. Do I think its a good thing that people judge you based on looks alone? Not at all, but you have to admit youre kinda askin for it, dont you think?

Goths, punk, and emo philosophies all deliberately put them outside of societal norms. With punk part of the philosophy is to deliberately make other people uncomfortable. (And it's interesting that you bring up Straight Edge, one of the large punk philosophies). People automatically are suspicious of anything that doesn't match up with their norms.

Now, should people do this? No. But the fact is that they do. Not trusting outsiders goes all the way back to the beginning of humanity, some people can overcome this urge, some don't even try.

When making a decision to abide by the goth/punk/emo/etc philosophies, you have to realize that by being part of it, you are deliberately placing yourself outside of those norms. Maybe you're not into the philosophy, just the fashion? Well, people are still going to make the assumption that you abide by the philosphies because you are wearing the 'uniform.'

In other words, while I wouldn't judge you by the way you look/dress, I don't think you have the right to complain about people making assumptions about your behavior when you have deliberately chosen to break their 'rules' about what is and is not socially acceptable (even if your only atatchment to the groups that are outside the rules is your preference for dark clothing). People wouldn't give you these looks and make these assumptions if you wore a button-down oxford. Does that mean I'm saying you should wear a button-down oxford and that you are bad/satanic/drug-using if you don't? Nope. I'm just saying that the oxford is the uniform of larger society and as such, is more accepted.

As for their justification? Well, goth philosophy glamorizes and romanticizes death and dark things (vampires, demons, etc). Punks are known to be more agressive and likely to commit violence than the poplace at large and actively try to dismantle various structures of civilization (the philosophy of anarchy). I won't say anything about emo here because I honestly don't know that much about it. And people don't take the time to really parse the philosophies that differ from their own so they don't know there's a difference between say, a punk and a straight-edge punk. They just see a punk and make a judgment call that this individual is more likely to cause them trouble. That brings up the other reason that people make umfavorable assumptions, ignorance. Most people don't know that much about the details of the philosophy of goth/punk/emo and people largely fear what they don't understand. For adults relating to kids this fear largely translates into suspicion.

In other words, there are valid reasons that people look at goth/emo/punk kids suspiciously. The philosophies that drive these movements are not friendly towards society at large. Does this mean they should judge you as a bad person and the kid in the oxford as a good kid? No. For all we know you could spend your time volunteering to take puppies to visit old people and the oxford kid is a budding psychopath. But because you choose to align yourself with these 'unfriendly' philosophies (even if it is only through your fashion/music choices) people will lump you in with the things that scare them.

A long post I know, but I hope it helps

if your emo or goth, you feel isolated or depressed about something in your life, otherwise your just a poser. Merely dressing in black or punk clothes does not qualify one to be either. In retrospect, I agree with you. People don't have justification for disapproving us or assuming we are bad influences.

Ummmm maybe by all of the dark clothes u wear, heavy make-up, dark hair, lookin dirty sometimes, the chains around ur belts, fish net stockings with holes in em, platform boots ect. They really dont say "Hey im friendly talk to me" now does it. Its stereotyping people. Its not a good thing but we do it.

I don't know what you mean by "there bad." It seems incomplete somehow. Perhaps you meant "their bad," but that would still leave us short a noun. Oh, I see you meant "they're bad."

What do they teach them in these schools?
