If you are considering getting one, research carefully to make sure they fit in your lifestyle. Not a good breed for kids, or in a household that will have a lot of pop in visitors - this breed is territorial and prone to biting without the typical warning signs (such as growling, showing teeth) etc. Also prone to having many skin & eye problems, therefore they can be very costly to maintain.

Shar peis were bred for fighting. They can be aggressive toward other animals. They have some problems fro their skin folds, too. Some dogs have their eyelid roll in onto their eyes. This must be surgically corrected. In general, the folds may have irritation or even infection at times. They are cute dogs. They were almost extinct and then bred back from a small number of individuals. They may have other hereditary
problems.

they are great dogs but the initial vet bill can be huge since most need an eye tuck to keep their wrinkles on their forheads from causing problems with their eyes. to the answer above they actually were not bred for fighting they were bred as a dog for royalty.

I think they are one of the cutest dogs. I love all those wrinkles and that Fat muzzle! I haven't met a whole lot of them, but the ones that I have met are sweet well mannered dogs.
