I find them cheaply (not more than $30) at garage sales. They are not the best but they are usable. I usually load them with Puppy Linux as it will run great with very little memory, disk space or CPU power.

Run an ad in paper, post on college message board, talk to your counselor, talk to your professor, and last but not least, go to computer store that takes trade-ins and you may get a bargin or maybe even a free-be if you know how to ask.
Some people will just give you their old one when they buy newer model. I had 5 PC in all and gave every one away. Ask around, and make sure they know you need for school. If you get real desperate, go to a charity, to your church. Maybe you can get a loaner for time needed. Be gratefull and thank giver profusely and mean it.

I buy a pentium 3, 80 gig HD, with a dvd player for 100$. I'm sure you can have a p2 for 60$ or less and it's good for your need i'm using it right now, I'm on the web, I have Outlook and Microsoft office install and it's going very well. For example, I leave near Ottawa and we have good used computer at http://www.refurbcomputers.ca/
