Okay ... I work across the street from a Starbucks. Everytime I walk by or buy something from Starbucks, I see a bunch of people just sitting there ... Some of them are with a friend, some are alone, reading a magazine or on their laptops. It kinda gets under my nerves, I don't get what's so special about sitting in a coffee shop for hours ... Seems like a waste of time to me ...

They're fuking dorks. A friend of mine took me to a coffee shop once, I thought I was going to go nuts with boredom.

Sometimes I'll walk to Starbucks, order a cup of coffee and sit there for an hour or two and read. It's nice to take a break from my life in a place where there's very little to distract me. If I try to read my book at home, I know I'll be interrupted ever few minutes by the phone, chores that need to be done and anything else that might happen. I just can't get the sort of relaxation I need to be completely engrossed in my book.

I'd do the same thing at a library, but the coffee shop is closer. Besides, the library doesn't have coffee or snacks in case I get thirsty/hungry. I've tried reading in restaurants, but fast food places have too many screaming children and uncomfortable chairs. Dine-in restaurants have waiters that keep giving "hints" like handing me the bill every 15 minutes. And the chairs may or may not be comfortable. The bathrooms in the library and in all kinds of restaurants leave a lot to be desired--they're often very dirty.

At the coffee shop, no one will bother me. The chairs are comfortable, there is soothing music in the background, amicable chatter, good coffee, good snacks, a clean bathroom close by and very few people under 18 years old coming in. (Those kids that do come in with their parents are typically well-behaved and do not stay long.) It's basically everything a person who just wants to take a load off and relax could ask for. And, happily, that's what coffee shops were designed to be--a place for people to go, drink coffee and relax, either with friends or alone. By the way, I don't see time that I spend reading to be a waste :)

Are you talking about me? Funny, i am sitting in a coffee shop on my laptop. I love being here because i can socialize, eat, study, and browse the internet. It is better than sitting at home doing the same things. I started out just coming to study. I am not a coffee drinker but the study atmosphere was just perfect, not too loud and not library (sing me a lullaby) quiet. Then i realized, wait a second, i have met many great people here, including my ex and many good looking men and interesting people. So that's why i hang out in coffee shops, to study and socialize

People sit in coffee shops for hours because they obviously enjoy and like it, why don't you walk in Starbucks and take a poll from the people who are " just sitting there", or better yet, why don't you get a life and not worry about why people sit in coffee shops!!!

Some people would rather spend 17 hours at home in their underwear playing video games (is this you?) and others would spend some time hanging out in public. Starbucks is one of a few third places (not home and not work) where one can hang out in public, out of the rain/snow/cold, without being bothered. If some of those people have their laptops, maybe they have a job they can do at Starbucks, which sounds like a great deal to me. when I was taking a class I did a lot of studying at Starbucks altho it was a little noisy for that. why does this bug you so much?

Well most people who go bring their computer to get work done. Starbucks is a pretty peaceful relaxing place. Most people just like to hang out there, I understand handing out there for a couple hours maybe 2-3, but for 6 hours? That's a little to much, unless they're doing work.

I freelance, and I occasionally work from my favorite coffee shop (not Starbucks, blech). The wireless internet is free there, I drink tons of coffee anyway, and there are fewer distractions than at home where I have the TV to watch, the dog to walk, the fish tank to clean, the dishes to do, etc....

When I usually pass by I see some people setting at the coffee shops or at the coroners and wonder if they have anything else to do.
Perhaps they do not have much to do..

Because sometimes it's just more peaceful and quiet than sitting home having kids pull on you all day long. Sometimes, you just need the quiet alone time and it's always interesting to people watch.
