After doing a "Full System Restore" on my Windows XP computer (from the hard drive backup copy), my computer always freezes exactly in the middle of the "Installing Devices" step. How can I resolve this problem?

True, it could be that it is taking its time to load the drivers. If not, my suggestion is to start up your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this at boot up by pressing F8. Safe Mode will only load basic drivers and settings for your computer to work. Once there, you may need to logon with a password that you've set for an administrator account. If you get a dialog box to install hardware, cancel it for now.

Then you may go to to Control Panel from your start menu. From Control Panel select System , which will have a tab for Hardware and underneath the tab a button for device manager. Open device manager and look for any devices labeled "Unknown Hardware" or hardware that has any yellow exclamation marks or red crosses. This will give you an idea of which items are not functioning properly or couldn't find or properly load the drivers. Then try to load a newer version of the driver if possible by double-clicking the affected device and going to the driver tab. If it still freezes, if possible physically move the part from one PC slot or remove it temporary and restart the computer with it removed before replacing it. This will force the computer to re arrange its system resources which may cause an issue.

Otherwise your can try using restore from system restore point. This isn't as complete as a Full system restore, but it would be a last ditch effort before starting from scratch. System Restore points keeps track of the system registry and other necessary files. It can be accessed through System Tools folder , a sub folder in the Start Menu's folder Accessories. Try restoring to a date that you have reasonable confidence in. If that doesn't solve the issue, you might as well start from scratch.

Are you sure its freezing? Maybe it is installing but just stopped. Normally you will know its freezing when your computer stops blinking. A Can or cylinder shape thing on the computer will be blinking. If its on a solid light, its not frozen. If its not even lit, then its frozen. So if its still blinking or/and the light is lit for a long time, leave it, its probably installing other things while installing the device. DOnt mess around with it

Your backup copy is corrupt.
Boot from Original disk.
Press F8 as soon as computer starts, and
check all options. Safe Mode etc.
