history-what wembley was like 100 years ago?

Everything in that area was farmland with small villiages nearby. Farming was the staple for virtually everyone in the area since factories were just starting to be built within thirty miles. But in some respects Wembly of today is very similar to the Wembly of 100 years ago.

Both areas were country - fields and farms. An attempt had been made towards the end of the 19th century to build a tower to rival the Eiffel Tower on approximately the area now covered by the Stadium. This was called 'Watkins Folly', but it never got beyond the first stage. The idea was to attract people out of London for a day in the country - which gives some idea of what the area was like. The houses that cover these fields now weren't built until about 1925 - 1939 when a vast amount of housing development took place on the open land around London and hundreds of miles of suburban streets with thousands of semis were built
