I am in Southern California and would like to start planting some flowers. What type are best at this time of year?

Cool season flowers - pansies, petunias, calendulas, stock, sweet peas, english primrose, dianthus. Impatiens and begonias, only if you are where no more frosts are likely.

In the superstore, fruits are usually picked out far too soon. Some are rocks, many are bad. Some of the fresh vegetables are typical right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.

assuming you are frost free you can toss out some nasturtium or poppy seeds and they will grow fine. with a little watering. just go to a good local seed shop and they can help you.
