My 9 year old recently wrote a 30 page story he is interested in having published. I don't wish to discourage him in this endeavor as I believe it is an admriable and constructive one. Does anyone know about resources for child authors? Are there laws regarding children having books published? Is self-publishing the only way to go? If anyone has any suggestions as to where to start, I, and my son would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

I would suggest submitting the book to a well known publishing company and see what they say. Be sure to let your son know they may not want to publish his book but that he just needs to keep trying. I don't think there are age publishing laws. I've heard of young children getting books published before. Do keep in mind though, many publishers won't want the book and it may take awhile before you find the right one. Harry Potter was turned down many times before it found the right publisher. Just keep sending it in and see what you get for results! Good luck to your son!

Age does not matter!
I have written and self published two books. Browse to Publishers & Agents. Many publishers out there. They will tell you how to send your manuscript and also what kind of stories they handle. I sent out many, many and got three answers to the negative. One took three years to answer. This is why I went the self publish route. Be very carefull, there are bad guys out there trying to get as many of your $$ as they can for nothing. Check (Warnings & Cautions for Writers.) Also, my books are listed on the net in Amazon and others and in three years I have sold not one book this way. The only way to sell books is with Book Signings. If you decied to go self publish, contact me and I will help for no charge.

My advice is, since this is his first literary attempt, to actually print copies and submit them to several book publishers. If refused then encourage him to try again and take into account that this is a leaning time and the quality will improve with experience.

You may have to act as a sort-of agent and contact possible agents and publishers yourself but it is possible. Good luck and good for your son for writing a story.
