i bought two sticks of DDR2 1 GB each and i put them into my pc but i also added the original 512 MB stick that i already had in there when i turned the PC on it turned on but after a few moments it shut off and it smelt like something might have burned up in my pc the next morning i removed the two new sticks of DDR2 and inserted just the original 512 stick and everything worked fine do you think it just some bad memory or perhaps something else like the way i put it in i would really appreciate any help you could give me and thank you.

they are probably burnt out. if there is a faded color around the edges then it is burnt out. if u just bought it then i would return it. it could be that it isnt the right kind either.

try putting in one stick at a time, and see what happens. You might have bought the wrong kind of RAM possibly.

Try using one at the time, and also use the one you know works in all the slots, just to verify that is not a slot in the motherboard the culprit. if the problem is only with one stick in all the slots, that one is bad, if the problem is with any stick in one specific slot, that slot is bad and you need to replace the mobo. also, please check in the motherboard´s manufacturer´s website just to verify if the ram is compatible with it.
hope that helps

you probably burnt the memory out by putting it in backwards or something. i would bring it back to the manufacturer.
