In a restaurant do you get served on the right or the left?

The most upscale place is strictly serve on the left and clear from the right. That's the way I was taught at the CIA and Krug. However. Sometimes it's too inconvenient when people are chatting and gesturing to somebody on their right or left. So I always served from whichever side was the mostly likely NOT to get the plate knocked out of my hand.

Nobody minded as long as they got their hot food and I didn't have to stand around saying "Excuse me" 800 times.

The food should be served to you coming from your left, but the empty plates should be picked up from your right. Only top star restraunts will serve you "correctly". Most restraunts don't pay much attention espically with booths against the wall making it impossible.

I always get served in the middle. I mean,I dont know if in America ettiquette is different,but here in London,food is served from the left, drinks from the right.

in the US it's usually from right to left, although some more elegant resturaunts insist that you always serve to women and then men keeping up with the old fashioned statment "ladys first".
