I have a powder that I kept for three years and it still works perfect with my skin.

I have a whole make-up case for 4 years and those make-up looks good on me.

I don't understand why some make-up experts say keep make-up for three months or whatever.

I don't want to waste my money. Why should I buy a new one when the old one is working perfect?

they say to buy new makeups every 3 months because bacteria builds up and other people might use your makeup to which is their bacteria too

First and foremost, that is really gross. Make-up breeds a LOT of bacteria, and you are putting it on your face. If you feel that you MUST keep your make-up for 4 years, then clean it!

For compacts, give them a good swipe and get rid of the top layer with a tissue, the same for eye shadows. Give them a fine mist of rubbing alcohol to disinfect it. Hold the bottle about a foot away from the product.

As for foundations....you need to change them because they oxidize and the color changes. So while you think it looks fine, other people don't.

Mascaras MUST be changed every 3 months, its like a toothbrush....how often do you change that?

Lip glosses are a bit more forgiving, but 4 years is excessive!

Make-up routines are expensive. Use your best judgment. If you feel it is perfectly fine to keep it for 4 years, fine. Just remember to sanitize the products regularly.

Keeping your makeup for too long will cause skin problems foro you. Whether it will irritate your skin or you might start breaking out. I do not freshen up my makeup every 3 months, I purchase new one after I run out (of let's say foundation). However, I use it regularly. As for eye shadows, if they are really old, I throw them out. But since I have so much of them I can't use em up within 3 months. I had some eye shadows that are over a year and they haven't caused me any problems (I still use them today!).
I think that your face is more sensitive because of your pores. If you infect your pores, it'll be a problem. That is why I wouldn't advice you to weark foundation or blush that's too old, even if it looks great. It's better to buy a new one than spend money to heal your skin.
If you don't use something for over a year, be careful with it not to get skin problems.
Good Luck!

Replace after: Three months to two years
Why: Microbe growth in makeup can cause skin irritations and infections, explains Paula Begoun, author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me." The worst offenders are liquid cosmetics, which build up bacteria more quickly. Keep mascara for a maximum of three months; other liquids and creams (eyeliner, foundation) for no more than a year. Powders (eyeshadow, blush) can be used safely for up to two years.

Be very careful about keeping eye makeup too long. Eyes are susceptible to infection, and you can keep infecting yourself over and over with eye makeup that's too old.

As far as the rest, yeah, I know they say certain things should be thrown out after a certain amount of time...it depends. Eye makeup and any liquid makeup is usually 3 months. Other makeup is usually 1 year.

You should really stick by the 3 month timeline for liquid makeup and eye makeup. As for the rest, I'm no expert, but I've kept powdered makeup longer than a year.

I am 36 years old, some of my make-up I have had since high school! I feel the same way..I spent the money, I am going to use it as long as it looks good!

But the reason they want us to toss it out is that they say bacteria can grow in your make-up. Which I guess makes sense. But I haven't yet had any problems, so I say keep it as long as it isn't funky.

Basically, make up easily gets contaminated with bacteria, and oils that are normally ingredients of all make up products easily oxidate. Smell your make up, if there is no bad smell, you have probably stored it adequately and it can be used for a while if you have to.Sometimes the consistency and color might have changed, you are advised not to use old make up, because, besides the health risks (infections etc) it also is outdated and sort of out of fashion.

In the case of mascara it can breed germs if kept too long..you dint want to get a infection in your eyes.also you should never use another persons mascara for same reason...I have foundation i have had for awhile...it is OK. but I wont use mascara after about 6 months. It can also dry out and wouldn't be any good. But if the mascara u have is unopened it should be OK.

I don't really know...that's a good question. The only thing that you shouldn't keep if mascara because of the germs....but other than that, I've kept my make-up for years and it works just fine. My face doesn't break out at all.

It maybe OK if you haven't used it, but it should replaced every three months if you have due to germs. You maybe wasting more money if you get an eye infection if you use your make up that is too old.
