Keep your router! It makes it alot easier to network your PCs and any other method is prone to problems! Connect the router wan port to your modem, connect the PCs and then run the networking wizard on both.

You don't NEED a router or a second IP Address to connect more than 1 computer to the Internet. You can accomplish it with a switch and Windows Internet Connection Sharing, but you will need a second NIC on your main PC. (1 connected to the Internet, and the other to the switch or directly to the other PC with a crossover cable).

Router does make thinks easier though.

Your PC gets a unique public IP address from ntl by a thing called DHCP. Unless you have a special account, ntl only give you one IP address for your account. One IP address means only one PC can connect directly to your stb.To overcome this you can use a router which uses the one ntl public address, and allows you to use multiple private IP addresses on your home network.

The ethernet switch om it's own won't help you in this case. Alternatively you could add a second LAN card to one of the PC's and use it as an internet gateway. But as you have a router you should use that - much easier.

ok first is router connected to one pc by lead and other pc by lead .
normally that is the setup .
usb and ethernet shouldn't be a difference.
basically you shouldve set up the router with one pc and then added the pc with a cable too.
then with both pc you run set up network wizard and make a disc and then run it in the other.

have you got a router?
cable routers are different to dsl routers.

get a router compatible for cable and connect the two pcs into that .

Your friend is right! Buy a switch and you'll be rolling.

Despite what every one else here has said, it's all a matter of managing your network in the right manner and it'll work.
