i think the "chinese" new year is just based on the lunar calendar (versus the solar 365 day calendar.. which is also why it's a different day every year). i never refer to it as "chinese new year", but "lunar new year" instead. or else i call it Tet (in vietnamese). it's a HUGE deal in VN and all across asian countries that just share similar cultural traditions. i love this time of year too! chuc mung nam moi to you and your family =)

Lunar New Year is invented by Emperor Huangdi who also invented the Chinese calendar in 2637 B.C. And the synonym of lunar new year or calender is the Chinese calender or new year. All the other East Asians who also celebrate these lunar festivals (Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese)got their early influences from China, Japanese used to until 1873. Overseas Chinese from SG, M'sia, Thailand...etc also celebrates it.

I think it is because Vietnam was under the direct rule of successive dynasties from China for a long long time, from 111 BC to early 10th century. Therefore, we are influenced by Chinese custom, including celebrating Chinese New Year, and that's why we celebrate CNY

They celebrate it because they, like the Chinese, used the Lunar Calendar for centuries. Gong xi fa cai! Gong hei fat choi!

It is the Lunar New Year. It is for all the Asians. It really shouldn't be called Chinese New Year but the Lunar New Year.
