You might want to try an architectural salvage store. When they tear down or remodel old homes, they keep things like fixtures, old banisters, railings, glass door knobs etc... You can find some really cool stuff in those places that they don't make anymore. They may be slightly more expensive than usual because the pieces are antiques. If it's too expensive to go that route, you may have to have one custom wrought.

You could always have a nice wooden one made as an alternative.

check the phone book to see if your city has a "RE-Store" they salvage all kinds of stuff like that, you should be able to find an old school iron one there. RE-stores are run by Habitat for humanity.

The big box stores have iron/aluminum railing for steps- check with them.
