I'm not a psychologist yet, so I will try to answer your question as best I can.
There is a difference between a counselor and psychologist. The term "psychologist" is well-protected. Only a person with a doctorate and a license to practice psychology can be a psychologist. The term "counselor" is less regulated. Basically, there are no rules for the term "counselor" and anyone can call themselves one. However, there are counseling psychologists. Counseling psychologists may specialize in more everyday problems, such as providing guidance in areas like vocational selection, school problems, drug abuse, and marital conflict. I am currently studying clinical psychology, which is in the assessment and treatment of psychopathology and mental illness. If you are not interested in spending that much time in school, you can also look into your Master's degree, which will allow you to practice as an LCSW or LPC. I've been studying psychology for 12 years and have been working in the field for 8 years. There have been the high points and low points. I enjoy helping people help themselves and having these "ah-ha" moments with clients. Then there are some low points, like helplessly watching a person decompensate and become psychotic because they refuse to take their medications. It's not easy, or else it wouldn't be so difficult to become a psychologist, but it is rewarding.

I am a psychologist (I have recently retired) and I found it a fascinating and rewarding career. If you are in the UK, then go for A levels in English, Human Biology and possibly Physics at above C grade to get into Uni. (You can get definite info from the Psychology dept. at your local uni). Many universities are now doing combined courses of Psychology with Counselling. You are looking at a three year undergrad programme, perhaps one year as an Assistant Psychologist and a further two to three years clinical training. You can be in private practice, the NHS, the prison service or with the addition of a teaching qualification, education. The British Psychological Society and the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapists would be able to give you more up to date info. Its hard work but it's worth it.....Good luck...Allan

Acinet.org is a good place to learn about careers.
This is their page about psychiatrists.
They do not have a page about psychologists.
