Guess it was because they are the most common of the flying insects. I know back in ancient times all flying insects were called locusts.

So a Horse fly = Horse walk
Dragonfly = Dragon walk
Tsetse fly = Tsetse walk
Black fly = Black walk
Fruit fly = Fruit walk

Well because there was this person that saw it fly and started to call it (fly). so everyone asked why do u call that thing fly? He said bacause it flies!

Maybe because they ran out of cute little other names. Like, lady bugs & butterflies!! So they are like.... fly.

Hee hee, maybe cuz they're pretty damned good fliers. Dragonfly's got a fly in the name too, and they're flying masters.

maybe just calling them a fly was the nicest thing to say,they do after all eat garbage and sh*t so they couldn't call them garbagefly or sh*tfly
