I had to do this before in art class. Its actually quite simple. If it doesn't have to be an animal, use card stock and make them into cones. Use masking tape to secure it onto the balloon. Put as many as you'd like on. Then, paper mache the balloon and the cones... You want to put enough paper mache on so that the pinata feels hard. Leave the end of the balloon sticking out of the pinata. Once you have enough layers (about 4-6 depending on how hard you want it to be) cut the end of the balloon and pull it out, but only do this when the pinata is completely finished. Once the paper mache is finished and completely dry (it takes about a day to dry completely) cut up colored tissue paper and glue it on in rows. You can pick any color scheme really. Its easier if you cut it in a long strip, glue the edge of the strip onto the pinata and then make a fringe around the bottom of the fringe. Once you are done, you can cut a bigger hole for the candy if you need one and cut the balloon and remove it. If you want to be able to hang it up, tape yarn on the balloon before you paper mache it. *If you use too much tape, the paper mache will not stick well.

Turn the balloon upside down and make the pointy side where you tie it the chin of an alien head. The shape is exactly right. Then paint it light green, put in big black eyes, 2 small circles close together for the nose and 1 oval under that for the mouth. The kids at our Halloween party loved this one.

Although Blackrose's really is more traditional for a Spanish class.

a pig would be easy. You could use toilet paper tubes for the legs, and another balloon for the head. A hippo, rhino, elephant, or whale would have a similar body shape. Or do fruit instead of animal, a watermelon, papaya, avocado...

If you are asking what to make the pinata out of, papier mache is the classic--layer newspapers dipped in a mixture of glue and water.

You could always make a Humpty Dumpty Pinata....

But Black Rose definitely knows what she is talking about so hands down she has the best answer on this question, in my opinion.
