would it be in any way related to the English Romantic Period even though it is a modern novel? Kind of a stretch but I am curious.

It is interesting that this anti-Soviet spy fell in love with a British communist (not a very political one really, just an idealist). And then if I remember right, he died because of his love for her.
The story never seemed quite logical to me; I couldn't see what he had in common with her, or why he got so emotionally attached.
You may be right. "Love" in Romantic literature isn't always logical.
