The big bang. In space there is no friction to stop an object in motion. Everything is still in motion from that, because there is no reason for anything to stop.
Gravity may takeover though, and the universe would condense.

The simple answer is that the initial energy from the big bang set in motion the expanding universe.
Objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. Because space is basically a vaccuum, there is no friction in space. So, there is nothing to really slow the expansion except the gravity between all massive bodies. Some say there is enough gravitaitonal attraction from all the mass in the universe for the universe to eventually collapse on itself. The more popular idea now is that there is not enough gravitational force for this to happen and the universe will keep expanding and cooling until its is completely dispersed. See the cosmological constant.
Your question is a good one and the answer is really a little unsatisfactory because we don't know what gave rise to the supposed massive singularity that preceded the big bang in the first place. String theory suggests maybe two membranes collided and sparked our universe, but then, where did those membranes arise from? So far, no one can prove why anything exists at all even though we're sitting right here.

the big bang is a theory when an atom exploded and spread across creating the universe. so far know one knows waht energy causes this but it might spread so much the universe can know longer expand and will cause the big crunch(a theory in which the universe stops expanding and contracts into an atom once more)

well basically these people are right (except for the lunatic raving about god) but whats interesting is they can explain why the universe is expanding but not why the expansion is accelerating....I hope they can figure it out!

though many scientific theories have been put at fore but still unable to answer these basic questions and probably that's the reason which affirms our faith in god!!
