People rail against it cos they think it's all about being depressive and self harming which is not necessarily the case. Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance was on TV recently and categorically said that he didn't encourage or agree with people self harming as you'd imagine any sane person would say!
It gets the tag emo because it's meant to be a combination of emotional and hardcore. There's always bands in this tradition, when i was younger we had the Smiths, Radiohead, The Manic Street Preachers and Nirvana and people came up with the same stuff about sitting around being miserable and wearing black. Largely because they don't really understand it and are dismissive, just as they are of emo music now, nothing much ever seems to change.
As for the music itself, some of it strikes me as being pretty upbeat and poppy; and not especially emotional or hardcore at all; have you heard Fall Out Boy's recent song for example?

You can put emo in many different contexts, it's not a bad thing. An emo can be someone that's very emotional and usually depressed, usually caused by lack of social life or someone that's been through an emotional crisis (death of someone close etc.)
These ppl need a friend, someone to understand or well, anti depression pills and psyhical treatments are options aswell.
In most cases this is just temporary state of mind, but very rough for the ppl going through it. Friends help. =)

EMO is the shortened-version of the word emotional. It is used to indicate a subculture and a music genre.
As for the subculture, EMOs, in a broad general sense, tend to be in a relative somewhat consistent state of depression. With depression, some people are not able to continue to struggle with life and its inconsistencies...so they commit suicide to end the struggle. While other people struggling with depression will do many things to indicate their struggle. For example, most EMOs tend to wear dark colors and dye their hair black to indicate the deadness that they see within life and within themselves. Another example is when some EMOs cut or injury themselves seeking to ease their already existing pain by way of so-called greater pain.
As for music, EMO is used in broad terms to denote the music genre of emotionally-charged music. Some people like to refer to EMO music as music that deals with life and its inconsistencies.
Is EMO unpopular? No, I don't think so. People say it is (mainly because of the unhealthy so-called obsession with death) but deep down everyone's somewhat EMO if not but for a moment in their lives because everyone becomes depressed at some point and time...it's human nature.

being emo i will answer this question with out stereotypes. not all emos slit their writs actually most dont, writs bleed a lot a lot, i personally like writs but most of my friends do ankles, hips or finger tips and a lot of them burn instead of cut and a fair number dont harm themselves in any way. Emo is just a philosophy that says i hate (almost) everything, and if you r super emo u also say i don't belong here im not worthy. im fairly sure goths are the opposite they think the world is not worthy of them.

emo is another social group. they are varied to being a bit depressed the whole time to mildly depressed now and then. it is unpopular bcause the majority of people are shams(chavs) who are the most judgmental people ever(next to posh people) and if your not one of them you are a 'freak'. not all emos slit their wrists. that's just a stereotype. and no. i'm not an emo. i'm rrrrandommm which is socialgroup for 'insane in the membrane'

The word has more recently been used to describe a subculture as a slang term, but still describes a music genre as well. The term emo as a music genre has become broader and broader with time, and now is loosely understood to mean "rock music with emotionally-based lyrics or effect."
Emo now often refers to a person's fashion, personality, or both, as well as the music genre.
Emo fashion is usually defined to have roots in punk fashion as well as gothic fashion.[3] By almost all current definitions, emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long bangs often brushed to one side of the face, dyed black hair, tight t-shirts (often bearing the names of emo bands), studded belts, belt buckles, Chuck Taylor All-Stars or other black shoes (often old and beaten up), and thick, black-rimed glasses.
When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an "emo person" is candid about their emotions, sensitive, shy, introverted, broken-hearted, glum, and often quiet
Some definitions of emo hold that a typical "emo person" is likely to inflict self-injury, most often by means of cutting, burning, or otherwise mutilating themself
