Economically, the same argument was made about Japan 20 years ago. Then their economy imploded.
China? They are polluting themselves so badly by industrializing rapidly that they're going to start dying off.

If you actually take into account the strength of their foreign trade, their military capabilities (they do have nuclear weapons), and the sheer numbers of their population, one would be hard pressed to not consider them the second global power at this time. Other countries can claim to be global superpowers, but I personally believe that China has achieved the right to be claimed as the second most powerful nation in the global economy at this time.
With that in mind, looking 20 years into the future is a hard guess to make. Russia is attempting to regain the label of global superpower that they had once achieved but have a faltering economy and a group of rouge provinces that want independence. Great Britain is limited simply because of their size and limited resources. Japan is limited because of its Constitution which greatly limits the power of its military. Germany is a rising star but will be held in check because of its prior history. Other players such as Iran, France, Pakistan, and India vying for power, it will make for an interesting situation.
