A filter is only essential if you want your goldfish to live. A proper size tank is also essential if you want your fish to live. Your tank is way too small. For two goldfish, you need a minimum tank size of 76 litres. This is why your water is cloudy. It sounds like they are still healthy, which is good, but without a filter and a proper size tank, this healthy state will, unquestionably change and your fish will become sick. It also sounds like you didn't cycle your water, so this is very dangerous too, for their health. Hopefully, with a little reading and research, you can prevent anything bad happening, but you absolutely need a filter and a larger tank ASAP. It sounds like you really want to take good care of your fish and that's the most important thing. It means you have the desire to learn about what it takes to make their home a happy home! Good luck and have lots of fun with your new fun friends!

You should be okay with frequent water changes, but you will get tired of this quickly. Get a power filter as soon as you can afford it. Make sure you add some chlorine remover to the water you are adding to the tank or let the water sit overnight. I find it very useful to have a gravel vaccuum, it cleans the bottom at the same time as you are removing the water you plan to change.

Be careful, fish keeping is addiction that will last a lifetime!

With water changes and tank cleaning once in a while you shouldn't have a problem, filters just do that filter the water so tank cleaning isn't needed so often. The number 1 mistake is feeding too much and too often , makes for a cloudy and unhealthy tank. Gold fish can live for years. I have had some for ten years but they live in a little pond even under the ice .Gold fish are strong survivors.

You've asked how long will they live in that environment, the answer is not long. I will admit that I am not an "expert" on goldfish but I do know that they will get large, too large for the tank you've provided. Plus they are one of the filthiest species of the aquatic world, they will poison each other within a month.
Get a filter, that will help a little. But, your tank is too small to even accommodate one for an extended time.

Good Luck

Yes it is essential, unless you want to remove the fish and change the aquarium water about once a week, the fish will die if let them live in fouled water.

The water changes will be necessary. The plants will help. Let the water sit for a while / a few hours or overnight before you do the water change. If you are using a city water source this will help the chlorine to disipate prior to shocking your fish. It will also help to maintain an even temp.

I've had goldfish that lived for years, or so it seemed when I was younger, in just a glass fish bowl, no filter. Especially since you plan on changing the water so frequently. Be sure to swish the gravel around when you do this to get their poop out.
