According to Genesis 1-2 in the Bible, when God created the universe He did so in six days and rested on the seventh. When Moses was giving God's law to Israel four thousand years ago, God told Israel to rest on the Sabbath Day as a memorial of God's seventh day of rest during the creation week. Early Jewish Christians continued to meet on the Sabbath for worship, study, and fellowship, but they also did the same on Sunday as a memorial of God's resurrection of Jesus from the dead on that same day of the week. Eventually, when Roman Emporer Constantine converted to Christianity, he gave government employees Sundays off. Not long after Saturdays and Sundays were days to rest from work with Sundays being a holy day especially focused on worship, study, and fellowship in the Christian community. The Roman Empire's practice continued in the western world up to this day.
