i guess that because you are so concentrated on looking for it that you always look everywhere where you think you most likely put it or you remember putting it there once. I think that when you stop looking you find it easier cuz your not so focused on where it could be and i don't know if your like me, but i always re-check in the exact same spots when i loose something and so it is pointless. doing your usuaal routine, you may explore places where you thought that it would never be in a million years, and sure enough, there it is. so if you loose something, try looking for something else instead!

because you are so focused on finding it, 'you miss the forest for the trees' when you let your mind wander to other tasks the search gets moved to the side, where a simple random thought can make you remember
Have you ever watched House and every few episodes he solves the case because someone makes an off hand reference which House turns into an analogy and solves the case. Typically its either Wilson or a Clinic Patient.

Murphy's Law. Even more annoying is that the moment you buy a replacement the lost item always turns up.

I have to walk back to the place I was or do whatever I was doing at the time to remember what I wanted to remember. - Yes, something's happening there!
