IT Engineer is quite a multi-disciplined computer industry role, it covers things like datacenter management, desktop support, network and power cabling, building, repairing nad installing machines, troubleshooting software and hardware problems. Most of these areas have their specialists, but a good IT engineer will be fairly good at all or most of these so there's more chance of getting a job. Salary isn't too bad, it depends on who you work for. There's also a surprising amount of manual work (racking up forty-odd servers can leave your muscles aching by the end of the day!)

ok..

an IT engineer has a lot of functions, as:

1. network administrator - they maintain the hardware and software that comprises the network
2. systems administrator - applying operating system updates and configuration changes, performing back-ups; adding, removing, or updating user account information, resetting passwords, etc.
3. database administrator - responsible for the environmental aspects of a database including disaster recovery (backups and testing of backups), performance analysis and tuning, and some database design.

that's only the basics..
